Ooooh… I want this!

It was really difficult to pick a favorite item from this Etsy shop (cefische).  This lovely turquoise necklace shown above is a top pick!

This handcrafted necklace selling for $18.00 on Etsy.com.  It’s painted brass filigree, and has a copper chain and brass clasp.

Uh-oh, did I lose you at filigree?

Don’t worry, I was thrown off too.  Thanks to Wikipedia, I learned a little bit about filigree, and I wanted to share what I found.

Ok, so “filigree” is a jewel work made with twisted threads usually of gold and silver.  It’s a delicate process of stitching of the same curving motifs to create a really remarkable piece.  Oftentimes, the result looks a bit like lace.

This form of jewelry making remains popular in Indian and other Asian metalwork.  It was also a hit in France from 1660 to the late 19th century.

I was informed this method should not be confused with “ajoure jewellery work” (which I don’t know about.)  So if you were thinking they are the same, think again.  While both have many open areas, it turns out filigree involves threads being soldered together to form an object, and ajoure involves holes being punched, drilled, or cut through an existing piece of metal.

This Etsy jewelry maker (cefische) oxidized and painted a brass filigree turquoise.  The seller then brushed the surface to reveal areas of the brass, making it look antiqued and super cool.

This 2 inch round pendant dangles from a copper chain.  I could totally see myself wearing this bold necklace!

I hope you take a look at the other work in this Etsy shop.  You can also learn more about this seller by following her on Twitter @cefische!
