GaryThomas' Coconut Palm and Maple Cutting Board

I checked out seller GaryThomas’ Etsy shop after seeing him post on the Etsy.com forums.  When I saw this item I thought it seemed unusual that it was made using coconut wood, so I thought I’d learn about the material.

Coconut wood is an alternative to indigenous hardwoods.  It can be used like any other wood, and it’s totally renewable – which isn’t so harsh on the forests.  The bottom third of the trunk is all that is used for timber because the rest of the plant is too soft for timber use.  These parts of the trees that are no used can be used for biomass to use for fuel in countries like Tanzania, where coconuts are abundant.

The seller (GaryThomas) was excited to sell this breadboard because it’s not too often that people can find coconut wood used for breadboards!  He had a block of Coconut for over a year in his shop given to him after it was cut in Mazatlan, Mexico.

The $30.00 board also utilizes maple and measures 10 inches by 18 inches (3/4 of an inch thick).  Perfect size for a kitchen!

This is so pretty! I love the different colors in the wood — it reminds me of olive wood, but this is better, because it’s renewable! :o ) Great find!
