Confession:  Sometimes, I search Etsy for wall decals.  For hours.

I have a serious love for wall decals, but I also have a nagging big picture brain.

When I moved into my condo last summer, the previous owner went a little nuts with design magazine aspirations and decided to paint tons and tons of color everywhere.  We’re talking a one-bedroom, 650 square foot pad with deep red, light blue, darker blue, white, and an odd orange-tan-ish wall.  Don’t get me wrong – I love a little color.  However, not these colors.

Here enters my nagging big picture brain.  While someone else may just paint over the walls with a more desirable swatch of colors, I cannot do that until all the details come together.  What if I decide to knock out some walls (which I want to do… eventually) and then the painting is a big waste?  What if I get new furniture that clashes with the new wall colors (you never know… I might).

So, next comes the plumbing situation.  I had all the plumbing replaced in the condo about a month ago – and got stuck with this:

No paint on the walls1 Home Improvement with Wall Decals

Excuse the poor quality of the photo (not blog worthy, I know), but look at this thing!  I have been living with this and it’s driving me crazy!

Even worse, I cannot find the exact color of paint that matches the existing wall.  You know, the color I hate.  So… I’m stuck with this lame patch on a pretty lame colored wall which matches other pretty lame colored walls.  Can I get out of this for less than $500?

Here’s where the decals come in.

I am loving the photo at the top of this post.  Plain white.  Accent with decals.  I am seriously considering this plan.

Plus, I love that vinyl wall decals are removable, inexpensive, and bold.  Even better, all this without requiring a degree in interior decorating or design.  Ideal!

This Etsy shop (called walldecors) has some darling decals for a great price.  What do you think?  Should I go white with decals?

Any experienced wall painters out there?  Should I re-build the wall from scratch before paining it?  Excuse the lack of knowledge – I’m better at window shopping on Etsy!

As someone who lives in an apt where you’re not supposed to paint (or risk the $100+ fee; crazy!) but is still really into interior decorating, I’m constantly looking for ways to decorate w/o paint. I usually rely mostly on paintings/artwork/photography and wall decor with fun furniture, but I love the idea of these decals. You can add alittle something to your walls that you can then remove. So you get styling without having to pay the crazy “I painted my apt” fee. I”ll definitely check this shop out. Thanks!

Go for it! Decals look awesome. My cousin has some in her house and I love it. Plus you can change them out easily if you’re taste/style changes. Maybe leave one of the colored walls as an accent color?

We’ve been in our place for almost 8 years now and have always planned on repainting the bedroom but as time goes on there’s just never a “good” time. I say do it before 8 years passes and you’re ready to move out!

A great site that will let you preview your wall decals by color against a color that matches your wall is http://TheSimpleStencil.com ~ it may help you decide what color to go with… personally I like white against just about any color but their designer will allow you to see what other colors would look like as well. Good Luck… by the way… I believe they are on etsy as well.
